Choosing A Winter Coat

Choosing a winter coat can sometimes be a challenging task. Especially, if you live in a part of the country where the weather is not consistent or winters may not be as cold. For me, living in Texas I always struggle with trying to decide if I want to go with a thick, heavy coat or a much lighter one.

How I select a coat revolves around two things: 1) the purpose it should serve, and 2) the look/style of the coat. With those two things, I came to the conclusion that it would be most beneficial for me to invest in both some heavy and lightweight coats.  With my search, I ended up purchasing some with a more traditional look that met my criteria.  One is lightweight (the black one) which is perfect for everyday winter wear in Texas and my heavier coats serve a purpose of providing me warmth. I figure a heavyweight one is needed for those rare cold days in Texas and for my travels to parts of the U.S. where a true Winter does exist.  The way I see it is that it’s much harder to compensate for warmth once you leave your house.  You are basically stuck with the coat you choose for the day and there is nothing worse than being in the freezing cold with a coatt that is not warm enough (been there, done that).   My rationale has always been that you can always take it off if you get too warm.  It’s much, much easier to shed a layer off than it is to get more clothing on once you are out and about.  So, my recommendation is if you live in a colder geography I would say going for a heavyweight makes more sense. But, then again having a lighter coat is always good for seasons other than winter like early Spring and late Fall.

The other factor I mentioned when picking out a coat is the style and look of coat.  I recommend going with classic pieces as staples to have in your closet. In particular, I have invested in a winter white and a black one. When I say invested, I spent a little more on these knowing that the classic cut and colors will remain in style for years to come. Here are a few pics of my coats and how I have styled them.

Look 1:  Winter White

Look 2:  Classic Black

Other fun coats that I like to throw into the mix are more trendy ones.  So, for my trendy ones I have a leopard print, faux fur coat which I absolutely love and get so many compliments on and my other one is a fun peplum styled coat. This one is perfect and fun to layer over dresses.

Whatever your style may be in coats, you can’t go wrong if you go with a piece that serves your purpose of giving you plenty of warmth and is a look/style that you love. Happy Coat Shopping!
